Thanks S!

The nights are drawing in and I'm still having vivid dreams. One of the dreams I had last night was a colleague of mine had come to work with a mobile anti "SAD" machine strapped to his forehead which was bing filmed for a documentary. Basically it was a mini flourescent tube strapped to his forehead whilst he wore a Biggles type pair of sunglasses.

My best friends' stepson was severely ill last week, so ill they thought at one point he was going to die. Now I'm not one for praying particularly, so I asked a Muslim colleague what he prayed about. As well as certain prayers they have to pray, they also pray for orphans and people who need help. So I asked him if he didn't mind praying for Nick. This was last Friday. That wasn't what the whole chat was about - very interesting actually. Anyway.........hopefully Nick should now be home. Makes you wonder.

Monday 20th August 2007.

Today, the song that I have had in my head has been "Feeling groovy" by Simon and Garfunkel.

Okay, time for some fashion hints and tips. Men first.

1) Please do NOT wear white shoes with black trousers, especially if you work in an office. It looks like you've trodden in the Tippex.

2) Open toed sandals are not attractive if your toenails bend over the edge.

3) Teeny tiny shorts and sleeveless t-shirts are not de riguer in Birmingham. I know we have a beach in Chamberlain Square but it's not a real one - honest!

Women next.

1) If you're over 23, leggings are not a good look. If you're ANY age and over 11 stone, leggings will never be a good look. Black may be slimming but not if you're wearing a tight sleeveless top on top.

2) If your feet are going to be on show, please make sure they are clean and the cracked hard skin has been removed.

3) Teeny tiny shorts can only be worn if you have the figure, age or are on holiday in Benidorm.

Saturday 14th July 2007.

Today, the song that I have had in my head has been "Black Betty" by Ram Jam.

'Tis the middle of July already - eeek!

So, I put my black trousers I wear to work in the washing machine with other similarly coloured items. Inside out to reduce bobbling. When wash is finished, I hang them on the washing line- still inside out. 'Cos I'm lazy and hate ironing, when they're dry, I hang them in my wardrobe - still inside out, I turn them the right way 'round on Monday morning before I iron them and they're covered in flippin' cat hairs! I haven't washed my cat with them so why are the hairs there? Every time. Nothing else black has the cat hairs on, just the trousers. It could be quite satisfying peeling it all off I suppose, like peeling an orange, or biting a rough finger nail but.....I don't want it to look any worse than it does already, especially seeing as the paint underneath is dark blue.

21st November 2006

The tune I have in my head is "Take on me" - by A-Ha.

Richard Wolstenholme of R W Home Services, tel: 0779965024 is not a bloke to be used for "no job too small".

Saturday 4th November 2006.

Today, the song that I have had in my head has been "Go West" by The Village People.

'Tis bonfire night tomorrow and yet the fireworks have been going off in Erdington for the last few weeks. What with Eid and shops selling them for the last couple of months.
When I was younger I lived in Wylde Green and my parents got to be really friendly with the neighbours as they all had something in common - young families. A lot of them took us under their wing when my Dad had a heart attack on holiday but that's another post.
Anyway, the families in our road used to take in turns hosting bonfire night. The family who hosted it provided the bonfire and the food, everyone else supplied the fireworks. The party went on for hours. Good times. Now, everyone seems to have their own private party or go to an organised one.
Two wonderful bonfire nights I remember especially when I was a lot older. Being taken to one in Cookham - goodness, wonderful display and romance, holding hands, feeling safe and anticipation.
The other was at one of my sisters who lived in Mitcham. She always had a firework do but one year the weather was incredibly mild, we stayed outside chatting for hours

Travel on the bus doesn't change - I would like to leave a message to the "woman" I sat next to the other day. I didn't realise she was going to bring 'round my Dad's log book from when he was in the RAF in World War 2. I didn't have time to read it all the way through but have had it confirmed it is true that people who have been involved in war don't speak about it much.
Apart from the fact it is fascinating, I can't deal with the fact my calm, logical, musical, intelligent, quiet father is the same person who's flown Dakota's and Wellingtons. Has been on low level bombing raids, has brought prisoners of war home - I did kind of know the prisoners bit but he always made light of it. Has been literally involved in a war! He's been to Singapore, Jerusalem, and other countries that have probably now changed their names.I wish I had more than a log book and nice large paperback of those who learned how to fly in Pensacola.

Another fact...she has the cigarette case that saved her Dad's life along with the bullet it stopped.

Saturday 2nd September 2006

Today, the song that have had in my head has been "Mighty Real" the Jimmy Somerville version.

I'm not particularly clumsy or accident prone but when I do stupid things or embarassing things happen, I do them in style. Like rocking the supermarket trolley backwards and forwards the first time I went shopping without my newborn son. Like walking off with someone elses trolley, not noticed the piles of dog food in it.
Like walking down Islington Row in the rush hour to the train station when my hold-ups give up.
The most recent episode was a couple of months ago. My hair is a bit uncontrollable and I use a product called Bed Head in an attempt to style it for a few hours at least. Bed Head smells lovely and you put a small amount in your palms, rub palms together and then "distribute and style". I was in my usual rush one morning, washed and "styled" my hair, not realising that my styling product was not distributed as well as usual. After 2 hours at work, I go to powder my nose, I can see a lump of styling stuff on the left hand side..an obvious lump!.....it is kind of greyish white and slightly transparent. Took me a while to get rid of the dried product.

Sunday 27th August 2006

Today, the song that I have in my head is "Time in a bottle" by Jim Croce. The air would still be fresh, the birds singing their hearts out and flying, for what seemed the sheer joy of it.

Sunday 13th August 2006

Today, the song that I have had in my head has been "Everybody's talking at me" Glen Campbell.

Don't think I've talked about my cousin T before. He married F in 1988. Wonderful wedding in Aberdeen, meeting relations I hadn't seen for years - or ever met for that matter. All the stops were pulled out. Then things start to get a bit strange. T's Mum seems to have a real animosity towards F and her family. We all try to look on the other side - protective Mum. It turns out that F has manic depression. Something that her family - including her father who is high up in the medical world of Aberdeen - has either ignored or not told T about.
I don't really know much until I'm talking to T on the way back from a funeral. He tells me that at the moment she is going through a phase of having to wear a different coloured "clowns" wig depending on the day of the week. On through the years, she has been sectioned several times. the most recent was when he was called out from work as she wanted to fly from the top of one of the multi story car parks. He has also told me how he needed sleep 'cos she was talking at him...gibberish...but she wouldn't let him sleep, he HAD to hear what she was saying.
I did ask if she was on medication - yes she is, but she loves the high when she's not on it. Hence the multi story episode. She has had to be sectioned AND restrained because of her not taking her medication.
Little did I realise that me saying "I don't know how you can cope with it" would have such repurcussions. T's now looking to get divorced and has met K - who is lovely. When they came to Birmingham they spoilt me (for some reason)...Cafe Rouge and Bank!

Friday 28th July 2006

Today, the song that I have had in my head has been the theme tune to The Banana Splits.

I think I must be getting run down due to my lack of appetite - although I did manage to scoff loads at my son's 21st at The Boathouse in Sutton Park - special thanks to Jenny and Ruth by the way. I'm getting niggly ailments and they're ruining my social life.
I was due to meet a friend I haven't seen for what seems like ages after work on Wednesday, but have had what seems like conjunctivitis - itchy, swollen eyes - so had to postpone. Now, I've not long got home and what I thought was something stuck by my tooth, seems to be an abcess - not that I've had one there before, I'm assuming that's what it is. I looked 'round and the woman in the seat across the aisle from me was either sobbing or having an asthma attack. Now I'm the first to admit, I usually avoid situations that could be difficult and I'm sure lots do as well and I'm not proud of that, but I just couldn't ignore the noise. So leaving my shopping bags and book, I went over to the lady and asked if she was alright. She turned 'round and said "My Dad's just died". I was overwhelmed with that feeling of grief you get when you hear news of the death of someone you love, for a few seconds, knowing what she was going through. We talked until I had to get off the bus. Whether I helped or not, I don't know but I hope so and I'm thinking of her tonight. Two lovely ladies on the bus too - one passed over some tissues after hearing what we were talking about and another looked after my shopping. Restored my faith in human nature.

Sunday 11th June 2006

Today, the song that I have in my head is "It's raining men" by The Weather Girls.

My son had a letter in the post the other day about his pension, telling him how much state pension he'd be entitled to. Crazy.

Today, I was up early listening to the dawn chorus. The sun was just coming up, the air was fresh and the birds sounded just so full of joy. Wonderful. Some kind of mental block like I have with map reading maybe.
And on the subject of birthdays it was mine last week. I really wasn't in the mood to do anything and just wanted to stay in bed all day but my Mum asked me to lunch and my friends asked me 'round for a meal. The weather was glorious and I had a lovely day. So cheers Mum, Denise, Roger,Christine and Chris! It's nice when people make you feel special.....wish I had more than one birthday a year.

A lot of buses now have what look like t.v. screens on them. They have horoscopes, sports and "celebrity" news and now and then show what the cctv is looking at. A hint folks. If you're on the upper deck and there's no-one else up there with you, make sure there's no cameras before you start having a delve into your nostrils.

Looking forward to next week. I've got a very nice man coming to paint my house. I didn't buy this house because of the decor. It's a lovely little house with lots of original features and that's what attracted me to it, not the colours it's currently painted. My bedroom is teeny tiny but the skirting boards are blue with a green stripe along the top, the ceiling is mauve, two walls are purple and two are mint green, the door is purple with the panels painted blue and mauve. This time next week, it should be cream and white. I couldn't leave it any longer 'cos I'm kinda getting used to the colours. And that's just one room!

I'm in a strange mood today. I feel sad. Not depressed, sad. Last time I felt like this, I found out two days later that two people I am very close to split up. I'm just going to have to 'phone/text everyone I know. Or should I? I don't like hearing bad news.

Tuesday 2nd May 2006

Today, the song I have had in my head and been singing (sorry Maxine) has been "Same Situation" by Joni Mitchell.

I've had surprisingly nice texts and emails from various folks about the Blues relegation - c'est la vie, was on the cards months ago, just wish I hadn't had a bet with a Villa fan colleague that this wouldn't happen. Dreading seeing him tomorrow.

Read the Kite Runner again - what a wonderful read. Everyone I know who I've recommended it to has said the same thing. Made me cry - which I resist doing.....long story.

The kids have had a good couple of weeks, staying with Jenny(sister) and Mark (her hubby) for two weekends. I've been packing ready to move house and I have 8 big cartons of my books, records and C.D.'s but only one and a half bin liners of clothes. Surely it should be the other way around - being female? I did have to give away some lovely clothes though, including some gorgeous dresses given to me as presents that I'd kept in the hope I'd lose weight. I've lost over half a stone and tried them on but I found it difficult to breathe.
I'd forgotten how stressful moving house is. It's the not knowing when it's going to happen. If I'd been given a date at the beginning, the organising of a lot of things could be done straight away - like sorting out the gas and electricity, that kind of thing, rather than doing it at what seems the last minute. In an ideal world eh?
Still, it'll be nice to pay off all of my debts, that'll be a weight off my shoulders.

Blues played Fulham away on Saturday, first match of the season. I had a bad feeling about that match and sad to say I was proved right. A point's a point but I wanted us to win as I felt if we didn't it would jinx the rest of the season . Those who know me will know I'm a voracious reader. When I saw "The First Wives Club" going cheap, I thought "book I can read, don't have to think and concentrate too much on" and, as the blurb says "Hilarious, smooth and sexy" (Cosmopolitan), "It does what all good books do, forces you to keep turning pages" (Independent on Sunday). I have never not finished a book, no matter how awful or badly written it is - maybe that's what the Independent was talking about. Need I say more? I could you know!

Saturday 16th July 2005

Today, the song that I have had in my head has been from some advert - "They're tasty, tasty, very very tasty, they're very tasty"

So I went to Birmingham's rally - United for peace - and I was sad to see so few people there, considering how many people live in Birmingham and must read the Evening Mail. Several of the speakers were so inspiring - I'm not a religious person but after hearing the buddhist and the man who is head of the Islam community in Birmingham oh boy did I feel inspired. And the poet at the end, who some people sadly didn't stay to hear was absolutely amazing.
One message was - imho - the bombers in London were not true Muslims - could be a conspiracy against them? The message that did come across loud and clear was that we should get to know our neighbours, respect other faiths and really it comes down to let's not judge others who appear to be different. Fine by me.

Friday 15th July 2005 - still....

BobCat aka Bordesley Superstar's Friday 5.

1)What is the meaning of life in your opinion?
Do as you would be done by.
Or maybe there is no meaning, you just have to go through it.
But I could probably go on for hours and hours 'cos that is a tricky question to answer.

2) What song do you think you could Karaoke the best?
Everything I own - Bread.

3)The most money you've ever paid for a meal for two?
Can't remember, probably £8.99 two for one special.

4)Have you bought your first Christmas present yet and of so what?
Aaaaarrrrrgggghhhhh - the dreaded C word! Everyone seems so self centred, rude and ignorant. In a few more years, there'll be nothing to keep me here apart from my Mum and having said that, I am not an only child. I want to be somewhere where people say hello, how are you and mean it. Somewhere where fireworks aren't being set off for no reason night after night. Where there's not the continual hum and smell of traffic. Where people actually care about their environment.
Yes, some of the people where I live do say hello and are very friendly, but they have been living here for years and are old. Soon the houses will all be let to students or converted into flats.
So, I've decided, when son's finished Uni and daughter's started, that's it - I'll be off. Not sure where yet, but at the moment I have a yearning to live by either a river or the sea.
And why typing that's made me feel weepy, heaven knows.

Wednesday 13th July 2005

That bloody song is still in my head!!

Right, I was going to write about this earlier but didn't want a flurry of phone calls and emails to me and my family. My panic is over so I'm glad I've waited until now. Last night and this morning, there seemed to be blood in my urine - eeeek! Seeing as I've had really bad kidney infections before now, I thought my time was up, this is it.
After talking to a friend who happened to be talking about what we'd eaten last night for tea, it appears beetroot is the culprit as that is all I ate yesterday. So let that be a message to all you boys and girls - eat properly - or eat beetroot and go through a day drinking gallons of water and thinking the end is nigh.

Wednesday 13th July 2005

Today, the song that I have had in my head has been "Beauty School Dropout" from Grease - but not the whole tune, just the first line. There is no point me putting links to what's happened as I'm sure everyone knows there were 4 bombs set off in the centre of London during this morning's rush hour. No warning, just set off. I've always hated going on the tube and how people must have felt being trapped down there makes me shudder. And then for some people to be escorted onto a bus which itself exploded.
I can't quite get my head 'round it - it almost seems unreal.
What could have made the bombers feel they had to do it in the first place?
